Humans of KHS – Thanksgiving Edition

Elizabeth Heikkinen

November 22, 2016

“This year my family is going to Granada, Spain, for Thanksgiving. My brother is doing a semester abroad there so we’re going to visit him. For the first time, it will just be the five of us (my parents and two brothers). They don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Spain, so our “Thanksgiving dinner” will consist of dinner at an Italian restaurant. I’ve heard that going to Alhambra is incomparable to anything, but overall I’m just excited to travel and explore a new country. Every year except this, my family has always had a big Thanksgiving with all of our cousins; there is usually about 15 of us at the table. Our typical Thanksgiving usually begins with everyone waking up late and watching the Macy’s day parade. Then, depending on whether or not the Thanksgiving is at our house, my mother and I either begin cooking for the day, or we get ready to go to our cousins’ house in Massachusetts. No matter whose house Thanksgiving is at, my uncle always makes a second turkey on the grill because he is convinced that it is ten times better than the turkey baked in the oven. Once all of the cousins arrive, we usually spend a lot of time just socializing and enjoying each other’s company because we haven’t seen each other for so long. I’m thankful for my family and friends, they are the people who are always there for me and I’m so lucky to have them. Since we won’t all be meeting up for Thanksgiving this year we are going to have a big Christmas reunion instead, so I’m looking forward to that too.”
